When eleven-year-old Julia Russell steps into the great house for the first time and meets Mr. Lafferty, the entire course of her life is altered. She meets a man who is nothing at all like the rumors she’s heard from neighbors and classmates. He’s kind and extraordinarily talented—he also happens to be deaf and uses a wheelchair. And when she overhears a secret about him, Julia decides it’s time for the town to bring Christmas back to Emerald Crest—an act that will change them all forever.

Silent Days, Holy Night

what i thought

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. A huge thank you to the author, Gilead Publishing and JustRead Blog Tours!*

This book was so sweet!  Going into this story, I thought I had an idea how this book would go.  While it sort of did, Silent Days, Holy Night ended up being so much more than I anticipated!

I absolutely loved all the characters in this novel!  Julia is so sweet and sassy and I just adored her.  I love how determined she was about everything.  Mr. Lafferty was the sweetest little cinnamon roll and, just like Julia, I wish I had him as a friend.

Silent Days, Holy Night was so well written, too!  The writing was so comfortable to read, if that makes sense.  It was just the perfect book to read, curled up on the couch with soft Christmas music playing in the background.

This book made me laugh and it also made me shed a few tears.  It is one that I will not soon be forgetting!  It also made me really want to start studying sign language again.

Silent Days, Holy Night is about loving others, friendships and embracing our differences.  This book is filled with the Christmas spirit, and it was honestly such an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet and heartwarming read this holiday season.

about the author

phyllis clark nichols.jpeg

Phyllis Clark Nichols’s character-driven Southern fiction explores profound human questions using the imagined residents of small town communities you just know you’ve visited before. With a strong faith and a love for nature, art, music, and ordinary people, she tells redemptive tales of loss and recovery, estrangement and connection, longing and fulfillment . . . often through surprisingly serendipitous events.

Phyllis grew up in the deep shade of magnolia trees in South Georgia. Born during a hurricane, she is no stranger to the winds of change: In addition to her life as a novelist, Phyllis is a seminary graduate, concert pianist, and cofounder of a national cable network with health- and disability-related programming. Regardless of the role she’s playing, Phyllis brings creativity and compelling storytelling.

She frequently appears at conventions, conferences, civic groups, and churches, performing half-hour musical monologues that express her faith, joy, and thoughts about life—all with the homespun humor and gentility of a true Southern woman.

Phyllis currently serves on several nonprofit boards. She lives in the Texas Hill Country with her portrait-artist husband.

Purple Kisses

what i thought

*I received this book in exchange for an honest review.  A big thanks to Priya Prithviraj!*

Purple Kisses is probably the most unique book I’ve read all year!  I don’t typically read a lot of poetry, but I have been getting into it more recently.  So, when I was asked if I was interested in being a part of this tour, I just had to say yes.  That being said, I didn’t know what to expect.  With this book, it was about more than just reading it; it was an entire experience.

I do want to start by saying that there is only one poem in this book.  Purple Kisses is not a poetry collection, it is simply a poem.  At first, this surprised me a bit, because typically, poetry comes in a collection.  However, the more I read (and reread) this poem, the more I decided that I liked the idea of it being one, individual poem.  It allows the reader to fully immerse themselves in the words, passion, and art that is found in this book without being distracted by what’s to come or what was already read.

The poem is short, but sweet.  I could really feel the passion behind every single word.  It is clear that the author put so much heart and soul into this book.

Another thing I loved, that I think really helped this book to stand out, was the art work.  It is so gorgeous!  The mixture of the colors and shapes perfectly capture the essence of Purple Kisses.  Just like everything about this book, the artwork is so unique, and honestly I just loved looking at it.

Speaking about the new cover, I feel like it really shows readers what Purple Kisses is about.  I love how minimalist the cover is, too.  The simplicity, with the pop of color, was such a great choice for this book.

Overall, I really enjoyed Purple Kisses.  My only complaint would be that I wish there was more!  This book was over far too soon.  That being said, I think that is a good problem to have.  It shows just how well the author and illustrator did at capturing the excitement and wonder of love.  I would recommend Purple Kisses to poetry fans as well as anyone who is looking for a short and unique read.

Summary

I’ve been running from my past for one hundred years. And I’m still just a teenager.

I was selected by my teacher, Sensei, to train in The Dimension: a secret place of refuge for the ‘anomalies’ of past, present, and future earth. Here I would learn to connect to my ‘warrior within’ as Sensei calls it – to channel energy orbs, commute between realms, and even shape-shift into an alternate form. But never did I guess that my training would include taking on an anomaly student of my own: a loose cannon of a college guy named Ion.

Late one evening, I invite him over to Sensei’s house for a little chat; one that will turn his life upside-down. Shoving him into the broom closet turned portal, I drag Ion into the Dimension, opening his eyes to his true homeland: a realm of anomalies. His kin.

As we train to become Protectors of future Earth, battling each other as well as our own demons, I begin to realize that there’s more to Ion than I originally thought: a darkness he’s spent his life running from. And beyond that, a looming threat hidden in plain sight – something that could destroy me, him, and the future of Earth.

The Blood Race is K.A. Emmons’ debut novel, and the first book in a riveting and fresh YA sci-fi/fantasy thriller series. Pick up your copy of The Blood Race today!

Hi everyone!  Today I’m teaming up with Writerly Yours again for another fun, blog tour.  This time, I’m sharing my review for the short story, I Still Remember by the founder of Writerly Yours herself, Priya Prithviraj!

Title: I Still Remember by Priya Prithviraj

Pages: 29

Genres: YA/NA, Contemporary, Coming-of-Age, Romance

Published by: Self-published (May 14, 2017)

Summary

Ji-woo dreams of becoming a writer and is back in college giving it a second shot. But then Weon-gyu, her first love, comes back into her new life. Will she give up on her dreams or will she write them a happy ending?

I Still Remember

What I Thought

I really enjoyed this book!  For it being only about 5,000 words, I admit, I was a bit unsure if this story would be able to be fully developed.  That being said, it was for me.

I really enjoyed the characters in this book.  Ji-woo felt very relatable to me.  I found her struggles and triumphs to be very similar to the kind of things I, along with I’m sure many other college-aged folks, go through.  Even though this book is short, I found myself becoming completely invested in the characters.  I was very curious to see how things would go.

Another thing I really enjoyed were the flashbacks that are in this story.  Flashbacks in books are iffy things for me.  Either I really enjoy them, or they end up just making things confusing.  For this time, however, I really enjoyed them!  They helped add backstory and gave the characters and their journey much more depth.

Honestly, the only thing I didn’t love about this story was that it was over so quickly!  I would have loved to keep reading more and find out what happened next.

Overall, this was a very nice, quick, enjoyable read.  I would recommend this book to contemporary fans!

A Valentine Secret (4).png

Hey everyone! Happy Valentine’s Day!!  Today I’m teaming up with Writerly Yours for the blog tour for A Valentine Secret by Emily Murdoch.  Be sure to check out Writerly Yours to learn more about them and this blog tour!

28698667.jpg

Title: A Valentine Secret by Emily Murdoch

Pages: 94

Genres: Romance, Historical

Published by: Endeavor Press (Jan. 21, 2016)

Summary

The course of true love never did run smooth…

Jonathan Brodie, the only son of Sir Roger and Lady Brodie, has lived in the village of Maplebridge his whole life.

Penelope, the daughter of the local florist, was adopted by the Baldwins when she was just a baby.

They could not be more different and yet, one blustery January morning, their paths collide in a chance encounter that is destined to change their lives forever.

Jonathan soon discovers that Penelope is far from the quiet wallflower that she first seems, but rather a beautiful rose just waiting for its chance to bloom. After spending more and more time together, it’s not long before their feelings for each other begin to blossom.

However, when Jonathan starts investigating Penelope’s past, in order to present her with the truth about her biological parents, his grand Valentines gesture threatens to destroy any hope of a future with the woman he has grown to love.

Penelope begins to doubt Jonathan’s motives.

Is he only concerned with placating his domineering father and convincing him that she is worthy of the Brodie name?

Despite his good intentions, will Jonathan’s Valentine Secret ruin everything?

Or are two people from opposite ends of society simply destined to remain poles apart forever?

A Valentine Secret is a charming regency romance novella about never giving up on true love.

A Valentine Secret

What I Thought

This book was absolutely perfect for Valentine’s Day!  It’s quite short coming in at just under 100 pages, so if you don’t have any plans tonight, this book would be great.

My favorite part of this story was definitely the setting! It had that lovely, 1800’s feel and took place in Great Britain during the Regency period (1811-1820). Valetine’s Day was just becoming a thing, and so it was really fun to read about how people were learning to celebrate.  This book gave me classic lit feelings but it was written in a way that was simpler and easy to understand, which I, personally, enjoyed, because it allowed me to devour the book without having to stop and reread passages to gain understanding like I usually have to do with books originally written in the 1800’s.

The characters were all lovely, too. I fell in love with Jonathan and Penelope’s relationship! He always treats Penlope so well, and not only that, but despite his upperclass upbringing, he never treats those lower in society than him as anything less. I also loved that Penlope was able to stand up for herself, despite the time period she lived in. The fact that her and her family owned a flower shop was just so lovely to me. It just seemed to fit perfectly with the whole Valentine’s Day vibe and the sweet nature of Penlope and the Baldwins.

The story itself was also so enjoyable. I loved watching Jonathan and Penlope fall in love and all the drama (but not too much drama) that occurred because of it.

Overall, this was a lovely, novella. It was romantic but not over the top, fun and festive, and so sweet. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick, fun read this Valetine’s Day!
